'Twas a Month Before Christmas

"Twas a month before Christmas
when deep in his den,
Santa was busy
with paper and pen.
He spoke not a word
as he rechecked his list,
making sure not a single
name had he missed.
With the fire so cozy
and his good faithful dog,
Santa needed a break
or he'd sleep like a log.
When what to his wondering
eyes should appear,
but sweet Mrs. Claus
with some cookies and cheer.
In the den she had come
without making a sound.
She made Santa jump
when he first turned around.
"Now Santa,"
Mrs. Claus said with a smile,
"why do't you stop
and rest for a while?"
They had cookies and cocoa
near the crackling flames
while Santa's mind pondered
over hundreds of names.
Megan wanted a narwhal.
Amy asked for some books.
David wanted a new
fishing rod and some hooks.
They chatted and laughed
'till the very last bite,
then went off to bed
to sleep through the night.
